Written by Emma Poulton Parley Thursday, 26 October 2017 15:01
November 2017 is the perfect time for exploring Edinburgh. Nestled between the Festival and Hogmanay, a trip at this time of year allows you to enjoy Auld Reekie all to yourself. Crowds subside, trees turn glorious shades of rust and cinnamon, and the city opens itself up to new guests with all sorts of autumnal delights. We’ve put together a list of some seasonal highlights, events and things to do to inspire your city break.
Bonfire night with a bang!
400 years ago, some Guy tried to blow up the House of Lords, and we’ve been keen to remember, remember the 5th of November ever since. Edinburgh has plenty of explosive events this year, including Fireworks Extravaganzas 2017, three fantastic firework shows across the city with pipe bands, fire circus theatre and street food.
Enjoy the changing seasons
Sitting pretty in 70 acres of beautiful botanical biodiversity, the awe-inspiring Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is one of the city’s most beloved treasures. This tranquil space is fantastic for a romantic stroll or wholesome family walk. There’s free admission to the main grounds, and the small fee for the 10 outstanding Glasshouses, each with its own climate zone, is well worth it. Afterwards, take residence in one of neighbouring Stockbridge’s many independent cafes and coffee shops, warm up with a cosy cup of something hot and delicious and watch the world go by.
Come hear the music play
Life is a cabaret, old chum, come to the Cabaret! From 14 – 18 November, 2017 Edinburgh Playhouse wilkommens Cabaret, starring Will Young and Louise Redknapp. This classic musical tells the tale of the Kit Kat Klub, set against the background of a declining Weimar Germany. There are still a handful of tickets left, priced from £17.90, available from ATG Tickets.
Embrace the rain
The National Museum of Scotland turns your rainy-day contingency plan in to a not-to-be-missed firm favourite. The permanent (and free!) collections continue to delight with Natural World, Science, Art and Design, and World Culture galleries, to name but a few. There are also plenty of new things to do for visitors in November 2017 with a fantastic selection of temporary exhibitions to explore, including a mini museum made entirely of Lego, a feature on Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobites, and even a behind the scenes peak of the museum in their Annual Open Evening.
Give in to your first festive foray
Whether you’re an avid advent advocate (try saying that after a mulled wine!) stretching out the Christmas cheer for as long as possible, or just want to beat the crowds, a trip to Edinburgh in November is a great opportunity to dip your toe in the festive action. All the usual favourites return to Edinburgh Christmas in 2017, including ice skating, The Forth 1 Big Wheel and markets brimming with all manner of Christmas curios and Bavarian bites.
