Winter is certainly upon us in Auld Reekie! Christmas lights twinkle against our glorious and varied architecture, and coffee shop windows steam up around oh-so-delicious hot chocolates and tasty treats. Edinburgh is a fantastic destination all year round, but really comes in to its own in December when the famous Scottish hospitality is in full swing. Keep reading for the low down on what we’ll be getting up to this month as well as info on the other events and things to do and see in December 2017.
What do a taxidermy sheep, a signed screenplay, and an unfinished Parthenon all have in common? Well, they’ve all made it in to Edinburgh’s 101 Objects, of course! From the surreal to the sublime, this collection of curiosities is scattered over 47 locations and provides a DIY guide to Edinburgh’s fascinating history. See how many you can fit in!
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again – Edinburgh is THE place to get that festive feeling. Every year Edinburgh’s Christmas comes to George Street, St Andrew Square and Princes Street Gardens transforming them in to a veritable Winter Wonderland packed full of things to do for the whole family. Book ahead for some of the more popular attractions, like Santa’s Grotto or ice skating, or just come along and soak up the atmosphere (and Gluhwein) of the Christmas Market and traditional rides.
A heady mix of comedy, cabaret and circus and just a touch of titillation make La Clique Noel a fabulous night out in December. From sword swallowers to striptease, this is a very grown-up affair and not one to be missed. This Christmas adaptation of the award winning and world-famous show resides at Festival Square Spiegeltent until 6 January, with tickets priced from £20.50.
One for all the family, this magical trail shows off the beloved Royal Botanic Gardens in a whole new light. Wind your way through a mile of illuminations, stopping to immerse the senses at the Choir of Trees and Crystal Lawn, before treating yourself to a spiced cider or toasted marshmallows. Christmas At The Botanics runs most days until 30 December, and is a ticketed event priced from £10.
Speaking of lights…
Another firm favourite returning to the event calendar this year is the Torchlight Procession. Kicking off our Hogmanay celebrations, this breath-taking river of fire flows through the Old Town to Holyrood Park on 30 December. You can watch the procession and finale fireworks from anywhere with a good vantage point, or apply to become one of the torchbearers for £12.
