Pubs in Edinburgh - Our Pick of the Best Bars

Dragonfly Cocktail Bar

Edinburgh's watering holes are as diverse as its inhabitants. The very well trodden paths of George Street, Cowgate and The Grassmarket may be your first port of call when you're new to the city, but once you're ready to live as the locals do, check out our top five suggestions of residents' favourites.

The Parlour Bar

142 Duke Street
Venture North to Leith and you won't regret it. The Parlour Bar is a kooky little cove promising a fine tipple in friendly surroundings. On offer are various events including vinyl Sundays, acoustic jam sessions and an array of cult live acts. Your eyes are in for a treat, too, as local artists adorn the walls with month-long exhibitions.

Dragonfly

52 West Port
Ok, so Dragonfly is technically just off of the the Grassmarket, but it's too good not to include. Nestled away in the West Port, this independent cocktail bar is a firm favourite with locals. All senses are catered for with an extensive drinks list, beautiful decor and superb resident DJs... not to mention the straight-to-your-table pizza delivery partnership Dragonfly has with the award winning Mamma's.

Teuchtars

26 William Street / 1c Dock Place
Ahhh Teuchtars. Crackling fire? Check. Leather sofas? Check. More whiskey than you can shake a stick at? Check! Teuchtars is the perfect answer to a rainy day. Settle in with a fine ale and an old friend, and soak up the ambience before feasting on a truly delicious selection from the Mug Menu. You're never far from Teuchtars, as they have two fantastic locations at the West End and The Shore.

Hanging Bat

133 Lothian Road
Hanging Bat is rather special. These guys have really taken to time to thoughtfully select their suppliers, from cider to pretzels, and have an almost intimidating variety of casks, kegs and bottles on offer - but don't worry, the staff are uber-friendly and really know their stuff. With its very own brews bubbling away and hearty meals made with local produce available, this place is a real winner.

Garibaldi's

97A Hanover Street
One mention of Garibaldi's and any true 'Burgher will have a twinkle in their eye and a story to tell. With its free pour double measures and technicolour dance floor, the affectionately known Gari B's is not for the faint-hearted. Think of Gari as the ex you know is bad for you, but you can't help visiting at 1am. This is a fantastic 'afters' bar-cum-club, and perfect for keeping the party going in to the wee hours.
